The many opponents of Marxism, whether liberal, reactionary, or revisionist, always seek to undermine Marxism by attacking its philosophical base. Among the more academically inclined, it is popular to argue that the term "dialectical materialism" is a kind of "metaphysical materialism" created by Engels and Lenin that distorted the more subtle work of Marx. Some even pit the young Marx against the old Marx, basing themselves on misreadings of Marx's earliest writings.
Historically, all revisionists have had to distort or deny Marxist philosophy in order to disarm the oppressed and promote the bourgeoisie's ideas under a "Marxist" guise.
